Screening

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) was created as a response to the attacks on September 11, 2001, with the goal to prevent similar attacks in the future. The TSA mission is to “protect the nation’s transportation systems to ensure freedom of movement for people and commerce.”

Office of Homeland Security Statistics Resources

In 2024, the Office of Homeland Security Statistics will begin reporting on airport screening operations. Later this year, we will release a report on TSA’s screening operations at airports. The report will include data such as:

  • Passenger throughput
  • Baggage screened
  • Checkpoint wait times
  • Prohibited items found

Other Resources

The following resources are not Office of Homeland Security Statistics products and may adhere to different data and reporting review processes.

Transportation Security Administration (TSA)

  • Daily Travel Numbers — TSA publishes daily checkpoint travel numbers for the current year and prior years.
  • FOIA Electronic Reading Room — TSA provides reports and data, including throughput data by airport and firearms discoveries at airport security checkpoints, in their electronic reading room.
