Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano delivered remarks last night at the Domenici Legacy Conference on Public Policy in Las Cruces, N.M.
In her remarks, Secretary Napolitano outlined the Department’s strategy for smart, effective enforcement of America’s border and immigration laws—reiterating the progress that has already been made as well as the broad need for reform.
She highlighted the unprecedented partnership between the United State and Mexico to strengthen enforcement and combat cartels by disrupting the flow of drugs, weapons and currency across the Southwest border.
Secretary Napolitano also discussed current initiatives designed to enhance border security, including increased personnel along the Southwest border, the expansion of the Secure Communities program, and improved inspection resources for America’s ports of entry including mobile X-ray units and “dual-trained” canine teams.
