LONDON—Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano was in London today to meet with international security leaders and join counterparts from France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom, as well as the European Commission and the United States, at the biannual G6+1 Ministerial Meeting. While in London, Secretary Napolitano and European Commission Vice President Neelie Kroes signed a joint declaration that advances transatlantic efforts to enhance online safety for children.
“Keeping cyberspace secure and keeping our children safe online is a shared responsibility of countries across the world,” said Secretary Napolitano. “Today’s joint declaration marks an important milestone in our collaboration through the U.S.- EU Working Group on Cybersecurity and Cybercrime.”
During the meeting with Vice President Kroes, Secretary Napolitano highlighted DHS’ role in protecting the United States from cyber threats and reaffirmed its commitment to international partnerships to promote cybersecurity cooperation. The U.S.-EU Working Group on Cybersecurity and Cybercrime was established in 2010 to develop collaborative approaches to a wide range of cybersecurity and cybercrime issues. In 2011, DHS and the European Network and Information Security Agency participated in the Cyber Atlantic tabletop exercise, a U.S.–EU effort to enhance international collaboration in incident management and response.
Secretary Napolitano met with U.K. Home Secretary Theresa May, International Maritime Organization Secretary-General Koji Sekimizu, U.K. Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin, and Italian Interior Minister Anna Maria Cancellieri to discuss a range of security related issues including international collaboration to secure the global security chain and combat terrorism and transnational crime. Secretary Napolitano also participated in a G6+1 discussion on modern border management techniques and information sharing challenges in the fight against terrorism and transnational crime.
Tomorrow, Secretary Napolitano will join representatives from France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom, as well as the European Commission and the United States, at the G6+1 Ministerial Meeting.
