WASHINGTON— Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano today delivered remarks during the joint session of the Major Cities Chiefs Association and the Major County Sheriffs’ Association winter meetings—highlighting the Department’s collaboration with state and local law enforcement to build a safer, more secure and more resilient nation.

“Over the past few years, DHS and the law enforcement community have transformed how we work together – to share information, build capabilities, combat threats in our communities, and address shared challenges,” said Secretary Napolitano. “DHS is committed to continuing to support the men and women on the frontlines through training, information sharing and collaboration to confront an evolving range of threats.”

During her remarks, Secretary Napolitano discussed the Department’s role in the Administration’s effort to reduce gun violence. DHS will expand ongoing efforts to prevent future mass casualty shootings, improve preparedness, and strengthen security and resilience in schools and other potential targets while working with partners at all levels of government. Earlier this month, DHS launched a new webpage with resources for law enforcement and the public on how to respond to active shooter incidents. In addition, DHS will continue to work with law enforcement on nationwide public awareness efforts such as the “If You See Something, Say Something™”campaign.

Secretary Napolitano also underscored the Department’s collaboration with law enforcement on countering violent extremism. In September, the Department, in collaboration with the FBI, launched a new training resource webportal, which provides access to hundreds of countering violent extremism training materials, case studies, analytic products, and other resources. It also provides a platform for communication and information sharing about countering violent extremism among law enforcement agencies across the country.

Secretary Napolitano also highlighted the Department’s work with local law enforcement to enforce immigration laws while securing and managing our borders. Over the past four years the Administration has undertaken an unprecedented effort to transform our nation's immigration enforcement systems into one that focuses on public safety, border security, and the integrity of the immigration system. Secretary Napolitano discussed how immigration reform promotes border security by helping our officers and agents better focus on public safety threats.
