BRUSSELS—Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Rand Beers was in Belgium today where he joined U.S. Deputy Attorney General James M. Cole in Brussels to participate in a Ministerial meeting on Foreign Fighters in Syria, with European counterparts, hosted by Belgian Interior Minister Joëlle Milquet.
“International security and homeland security are inextricably linked, and we continue to work with our international partners to strengthen the security of the global trade and travel networks upon which all our nations’ economies and citizens rely,” said Acting Secretary Beers. “Close coordination on these important issues remains a priority and today's meeting provided another opportunity to continue to build these important partnerships as we work together towards common goals."
While in Brussels, Acting Secretary Beers also met with Belgian Interior Minister Milquet, Spanish Interior Minister Jorge Fernández Diaz, Swedish Justice Minister Beatrice Ask, U.K. Home Secretary Theresa May and Danish Justice Minister Morten Bødskov to discuss homeland security-related priorities and collective efforts to ensure our common security interests.
Tomorrow, Acting Secretary Beers will meet with Dutch Minister of Security and Justice Ivo Opstelten, and travel to Turkey to meet with his international counterparts.
