WASHINGTON— Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson today hosted the Official Portrait Unveiling Ceremony in honor of former Secretary Michael Chertoff, who served as the nation’s second Secretary of Homeland Security from February 15, 2005 – January 21, 2009.
“As the second Secretary of Homeland Security, Michael Chertoff led the Department at a critical moment in its history, overseeing important reforms and confronting complex and evolving threats as he worked to keep our nation safe,” said Secretary Johnson. “His efforts strengthened coordination among the Department’s operational agencies, increased the Department’s focus on preparedness ahead of disasters, and enhanced security at our borders and airports. On behalf of all the men and women of DHS – past, present, and future – I thank Secretary Chertoff for his service to the Department.”
The official portrait, painted by Robert A. Anderson, is a tribute to Secretary Chertoff’s service to the Department and the nation. The portrait will be placed in the hallway of the Office of the Secretary at DHS Headquarters in Washington.
“I would like to thank Robert Anderson for his time and contribution to this piece,” said Michael Chertoff. “I know this portrait will stand in the company of others who, like me, were honored then and remain deeply honored today to have served as part of this exceptional team of men and women who are always standing watch to protect our nation and keep our citizens safe.”
