WASHINGTON— Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson today met with New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and New York City Police Department Commissioner William Bratton to underscore the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) important collaboration with community leaders and state and local law enforcement to counter violent extremism. This meeting was a follow up to Secretary Johnson’s recent trip to New York, where he met with New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio, as well as top officials from local, state and federal law enforcement and public safety offices to discuss security preparedness and coordination in the New York-New Jersey region.
During the meeting Secretary Johnson also discussed the U.S. government’s response to the Ebola epidemic in West Africa. Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced new layers of entry screening at five U.S. airports that receive over 94 percent of travelers from the Ebola-affected nations of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. New York’s JFK International Airport began these new screening measures on Saturday.
Secretary Johnson reiterated his commitment to continuing to work with these important partners to ensure our nation’s safety and security.
