March 29, 2012 —The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has recently concluded a successful field test in Arizona of a wide area airborne surveillance system (WAASS) using, for the first time, a tethered aerostat platform–WAASS sensors were suspended from an unmanned, 75 foot long, helium-filled balloon floating 2,000 feet above the Arizona desert.
