Direct hire authority (DHA) permits HSI to fill critical positions with highly qualified candidates without the need to use the competitive hiring process.

Due to recent and evolving geopolitical and global economic events, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) is looking to hire the next generation of Criminal Investigators (also known as Special Agents/GS-1811).

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently hosted a two-day, in-person Career Expo, June 27 and 28, 2024, at the Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly, VA to fill hundreds of mission critical positions across the Department.

  • Finance: Skilled in collecting, reviewing, organizing or analyzing financial data.
  • Cyber/Information Technology: Expertise in data science, networks, operating systems or digital forensics.
  • Intelligence: Knowledge of collecting or analyzing investigative or national security information.
  • Language Skills: Languages native to Asia, the Middle East, Russia or Ukraine, including Mandarin, Arabic, Urdu, Farsi, Dari, Pashtu and Persian.

To be considered for a tentative selection under DHA, in addition to skills in at least one of the four specialization categories: finance, cyber/information technology, intelligence, and/or language skills you must also meet basic U.S. Office of Personnel Management minimum qualifications regarding experience, education or a combination thereof.

Do I Qualify?

Applicants must meet the following qualifications:

  • Be at least 21 years of age and Enter on Duty (EoD) prior to your 37th birthday.
    • The date immediately preceding an individual's 37th birthday is the last day to be appointed (EoD) for selection (Pub.L. 93-950 and 100-238).
    • The age restriction may not apply if you are:
      • A preference-eligible veteran or if you are currently serving, or
      • Currently serving or previously served in a federal civilian law enforcement position covered by 5 U.S.C. § 8336(c) or 5 U.S.C. § 8412(d).
  • Satisfactorily complete a drug test as a mandatory condition of employment with HSI. Drug testing will be performed on site at the expo.
  • Cannot have any felony convictions. In addition, according to the Lautenberg Amendment, 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(9), any person who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence cannot lawfully possess a firearm or ammunition.

All tentatively selected applicants:

  • Must undergo, and successfully complete, a background investigation as a condition of employment for this position.
  • May be required to successfully pass a polygraph examination.
  • Must submit to a medical examination to include drug testing.
  • Must complete and pass a pre-employment physical fitness test.

All candidates are required to attend 22 weeks of paid training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Brunswick, Georgia.
