Derek W. Gordon
Acting Deputy Executive Associate Director
Derek W. Gordon is currently the acting deputy executive associate director (EAD) of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). He oversees a workforce of over 10,000 employees, including special agents, criminal analysts, mission support personnel and contract staff assigned to over 237 offices throughout the United States and over 56 countries around the world.
Mr. Gordon simultaneously serves as the deputy director to the DHS Joint Task Force-East (JTF-E). JTF-E leads and coordinates integrated and prioritized DHS cross-component operations to bolster border security, reduce terrorism risk, and dismantle illicit networks. In this role, Mr. Gordon oversees JTF-E support to cross-functional operations across 11 of the DHS regional coordinating mechanisms created to integrate DHS components within the Caribbean Sea and along the East and Gulf Coasts.
Prior to becoming acting deputy EAD, Mr. Gordon served as the assistant director of Domestic Operations and managed, directed and coordinated the investigative activities of HSI’s 237 domestic field offices, overseeing all major enforcement initiatives and deconflicting field operations.
Mr. Gordon also served as the special agent in charge of HSI Washington, D.C., where he oversaw the criminal investigative portfolio and activities of more than 200 employees covering an area of responsibility that includes the District of Columbia, Virginia and West Virginia.
Throughout his career, Mr. Gordon has served in several other key leadership positions for HSI. Mr. Gordon previously served as the deputy special agent in charge of HSI Miami, where he oversaw criminal investigations involving maritime offenses, airports, violent crime, commercial fraud, counterproliferation and cyber violations in South Florida.
In addition, Mr. Gordon served as the assistant special agent in charge and the group supervisor for counterproliferation investigations in Fort Lauderdale. Prior to that, he served as the chief of staff of National Security Investigations at HSI headquarters, where he was responsible for the day-to-day operations of a 350-person division and $130 million budget.
Mr. Gordon began his law enforcement career as a local police officer, and during his almost three-decade career, he has participated in numerous high-profile investigations as a supervisor and a case agent.
Mr. Gordon holds a bachelor’s degree from West Chester University and is a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.
