WASHINGTON — The Department of Homeland Security's Cyber Crimes Center (C3) has announced the expansion of its global presence with the addition of four new International Cyber Investigations Liaison (CIL) positions. These roles, based in Ottawa, Canada; London, England; The Hague, Netherlands; and Sydney, Australia, will enhance global law enforcement collaborations to tackle complex transnational cybercrime.
The CIL positions will bolster the resources available to the Cyber Crime Unit (CCU), which is led by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).
“By expanding our international presence, we are strengthening our ability to combat the evolving threats of transnational cybercrime. These new positions will enhance our collaboration with global law enforcement partners, allowing us to disrupt criminal networks more effectively and protect communities worldwide,” said DHS Cyber Crimes Center Deputy Assistant Director Mike Prado.
The CCU is dedicated to providing investigative and operational support for high-impact, cyber-enabled and cyber-dependent investigations targeting global criminal networks.
Utilizing advanced technology and expert collaboration, the CCU directly supports investigations into digital crime and network intrusions. Key capabilities include:
- Advanced Analytical Support: Cryptocurrency tracing and big data analytics.
- Complex Cyber Investigative Support: Development of unique capabilities and workflow enhancements.
- Data Engineering: Innovative technical solutions for field investigations.
- Public/Private Collaboration: Leveraging partnerships to support intricate cyber investigations.
In addition to its investigative efforts, the CCU is committed to developing comprehensive training programs to bolster law enforcement's cyber investigative skills. The unit fosters strong relationships with both domestic and international partners to facilitate global collaboration in the fight against cybercrime.
This expansion underscores the increasing commitment of HSI to combat cybercrime effectively. By placing cyber agents in strategic locations, the initiative aims to disrupt the activities of criminal threat actors in real-time, reducing cybercrime and addressing threats proactively rather than reactively.
HSI is a worldwide law enforcement leader in dark net and other cyber-related criminal investigations. The Cyber Crimes Center combats cybercrime and criminal exploitation of the internet with state-of-the-art forensic technology. The center investigates large-scale cybercrime threats and provides expertise on cybercrime investigations to the field. It also uses global law enforcement networks to combat cybercrime threats. C3 delivers computer and cyber-based technical services in support of HSI cases – including investigations into underground online marketplaces selling illegal drugs, weapons and other contraband; enabling the trade of images of child exploitation materials; and facilitating the theft of intellectual property, trade secrets, and export-controlled technology and data.
