NEWARK, N.J. — An investigation led by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Newark resulted in the sentencing of a former New Jersey nurse who possessed child sexual abuse material.
Anthony Barbarino, 38, of Egg Harbor City, New Jersey, received his 33-month sentence Oct. 24 at the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey in Camden. He previously pleaded guilty to an information charging him with one count of possession of child pornography.
“The horrific imagery found during our investigation has put Barbarino behind bars,” said HSI Newark acting Special Agent in Charge Spiros Karabinas. “With this sentence, HSI Newark and our partners in the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office ensured a child predator no longer held his position of trust in our community. We will continue to relentlessly pursue offenders who perpetuate this sinister digital world of child sexual exploitation and abuse.”
According to the investigation, from April 12, 2022, to Aug. 3, 2022, Barbarino knowingly possessed 93 still photographs and 108 videos of child sexual abuse across three electronic devices, including at least one image of a prepubescent minor or a minor under 12 years of age, and at least one image that portrayed sadistic or masochistic conduct or other depictions of violence. Barbarino was arrested and charged by federal criminal complaint on Aug. 3, 2022, with the same offense. Prior to that arrest, Barbarino was employed as a nurse.
In addition to the prison term, Barbarino was sentenced to 10 years of supervised release, and ordered him to pay $13,000 in restitution to his victims, $5,000 under the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act, and $5,000 under the Amy, Vicky, and Andy Child Pornography Victim Assistance Act.
