VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Washington, D.C., in partnership with the Virginia Beach Police Department (VBPD), executed a groundbreaking operation that led to the seizure of 156 pounds of methamphetamine Nov. 7. The record-setting seizure is the largest in VBPD’s history and represents a critical strike against drug trafficking in the Hampton Roads area.
“This record-breaking seizure demonstrates the power of collaboration between federal and local law enforcement,” said HSI Washington, D.C. acting Special Agent in Charge Kai Wah Chan. “HSI is committed to disrupting the flow of dangerous drugs into our communities and protecting public safety. By working together with our partners at the Virginia Beach Police Department, we’ve delivered a major blow to a drug trafficking network that threatened the well-being of families in Hampton Roads.
As a part of a joint investigation targeting narcotics distribution, HSI D.C. agents and VBPD officers approached Alonzo Harden Jr., 54, of St. Paul, Minnesota, in the 4400 block of Bonney Road. A narcotics canine, Luna, conducted an open-air sniff around Harden Jr.’s vehicle and alerted to the presence of illegal substances. Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered two large bags in the trunk containing approximately 156 pounds of methamphetamine, with an estimated street value of $350,000.
Harden Jr. was immediately taken into custody and now faces multiple felony charges, including possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, possession of a schedule I/II controlled substance, and multiple felony firearms violations.
HSI D.C. continues to prioritize collaborative operations with state and local agencies to combat organized crime and safeguard communities across the region.
