Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas announced updates to the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Use of Force Policy as required by President Biden’s Executive Order to Advance Effective, Accountable Policing and Strengthen Public Safety to meet or exceed the Department of Justice guidance on use of force. This policy was crafted as a result of discussions with stakeholders across the Department as well as major national labor organizations to further refine processes to ensure the safety of law enforcement personnel and the communities we serve. This is the first update of the Department’s Use of Force policies since 2018.
Simulation Experiment (SIMEX) is an immersive virtual reality environment that allows real operators (e.g., police officers, mental health professionals, subjects, etc.) to interact within a representative environment to explore the interactions between people and technology.
In April 2021 HSSEDI conducted the Law Enforcement Use of Force SIMEX for the DHS Office for State and Local Law Enforcement to explore the factors and scenarios that contribute to escalating use of force.

The Assaults and Use of Force Reporting System (AUFRS) is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) web-based application that allows all CBP components to record and track incidents involving assaults against CBP employees, use of force incidents, reportable firearms discharges, and vehicle pursuits by CBP law enforcement agents and officers (CBP LEO).
