Statement from Secretary Mayorkas on the Candidacy of Ian Saunders to Become the Secretary General of the World Customs Organization

Release Date: June 21, 2023

WASHINGTON – Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas released the following statement on the candidacy of Ian Saunders to become the Secretary General of the World Customs Organization.

“As the Secretary of Homeland Security and on behalf of our Department, I strongly support the candidacy of Ian Saunders to become the Secretary General of the World Customs Organization. Mr. Saunders brings with him decades of experience, most recently serving as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere at the International Trade Administration in the Department of Commerce. He previously served at U.S. Customs and Border Protection, where he worked regularly on the most complex matters involving customs, commercial policy, infrastructure, and travel.

“Ian Saunders’ 30 year career dedicated to the customs and trade community, and to cultivating strong public-private partnerships, is exactly right to drive the innovation that is needed as the world deals with supply chain disruptions, e-commerce exploitation, and climate change.

“Mr. Saunders is prepared to bring creative and accountable leadership that will empower customs agencies to tackle emerging and complex challenges at a critical moment in history. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security strongly supports his campaign to forge a safe, prosperous, and inclusive future in the vital world of trade.”
