Colleagues,
It is an honor to recognize today as the 19th anniversary of our Department of Homeland Security.
On behalf of President Biden, I have attached his letter to you and to all federal employees, thanking you for all you do for the American people.
A great deal has changed over the past nearly two decades since our Department was first formed. The threats to our homeland have evolved, the programs we administer have grown and become more complex, and our mission has expanded to meet the challenges and opportunities before us.
In 2003, our Department employed 180,000 people and had a budget of about $23 billion. Today, we have approximately 250,000 employees and a budget of more than $54 billion.
Amidst all the change that has occurred over the past 19 years, one remarkable quality of ours has remained steadfast. It is the character of our people – of all of you. Your talent and tireless dedication to mission, often at great personal sacrifice, reflect the best of public service.
On this 19th anniversary of the United States Department of Homeland Security, I thank you for everything you do in service to our nation.
Alejandro N. Mayorkas
Secretary of Homeland Security
With honor and integrity, we will safeguard the American people, our homeland, and our values.
