A Message from Secretary Mayorkas on National Police Week

Release Date: May 9, 2024

Colleagues:

Next week is National Police Week. Our nation, including our Department, will commemorate the courage of the law enforcement officer and honor the fallen heroes who gave their lives in the line of duty.

This morning, our Department will remember and honor 19 DHS law enforcement agents and officers who died in the line of duty. You can watch the ceremony at 11:00 a.m. ET at dhs.gov/live.

More than 80,000 law enforcement officers serve throughout the Department of Homeland Security. We are the largest law enforcement department or agency in the federal government. Our law enforcement officers put their lives on the line to secure our borders, protect the President, combat crimes of exploitation and abuse, keep fentanyl off our streets, safeguard our federal buildings, protect passengers in transit, apprehend cyber criminals, war criminals, and human smugglers, and so much more.
To all of you who wear the badge, and to your families and loved ones who support you and who make the sacrifices with you, thank you for everything you do to keep our country safe and secure.

Alejandro N. Mayorkas
Secretary of Homeland Security
