Beyond startup programs, university partnerships and prize competitions, there are still countless ways to promote public safety innovation. One of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate’s (S&T) most consequential efforts to do so has focused on giving the private sector legal incentive to continue developing and deploying large scale security technologies.
Given their rapid technology advancement and proliferation, the public safety and homeland security communities must address the fact that drones can be used nefariously or maliciously to hurt people, disrupt activities and damage infrastructure.
S&T found a potential solution to the problem in a simple, but effective, buoy mooring system. Instead of a concrete sinker, Cole Keaoulu Santos, an innovator from Hawaii, proposed a narrow screw anchor; instead of a heavy metal chain, he suggested an elastic rope to prevent scraping of the ocean floor.
The Port and Coastal Surveillance program is a multi-year effort within the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate that will improve maritime situational awareness enabling rapid tactical response to maritime threats.
The Arctic Communications and Technologies program is a multi-year effort within the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate that will identify and evaluate appropriate terrestrial and space-based solutions to extend and enable U.S. Coast Guard operations in the Arctic.
The Ground Based Technologies program is a multi-year effort within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate that will improve situational awareness of U.S. terrestrial borders between the ports of entry by pursuing technologies such as radars, imagers, and unattended ground sensors for use by DHS components.
