The Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Office (CWMD) supports our Federal, State, Local, Tribal, and Territorial (FSLTT) partners with the development and technology to protect against chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) threats.
CWMD researches, develops, acquires, and deploys CBRN detection and monitoring equipment to support our FSLTT partners.
CWMD’s RPMs are fixed radiological/nuclear detection systems located at U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) ports of entry and used primarily to detect threat material in cargo and vehicles entering the United States. CWMD develops, acquires, and deploys these RPMs to CBP.
CWMD’s personal detection gear are portable systems that law enforcement officers and other operators can carry with them. CWMD equips DHS components, other federal agencies, and State, Local, Tribal, and Territorial (SLTT) partners with tens of thousands of personal CBRN detection devices to enable them to detect, interdict, respond to, and report threats.
CWMD provides timely research to develop, access, acquire, support, deploy, and improve counter Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) and CBRN capabilities that meet current and emerging operational needs for DHS and FSLTT partners.
