S&T CSAC developed a new cyanide detection test method, both affordable and efficient, to test fire survivors for toxic cyanide exposure at the scene.
DHS S&T collaborated with Higher Dimension Materials, Inc. (HDM) and North Carolina State University Textile Protect and Comfort Center to identify and develop the best materials with which to create a more durable and flexible glove for rescue hoist operations.
DHS S&T teamed with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory to develop POINTER, a groundbreaking first responder tracking technology that uses magnetoquasistatic fields to three-dimensionally locate responders during emergencies—especially when visibility is low due to heavy smoke or debris. With POINTER, incident command can pinpoint team members within one meter.

In an emergency, it is vital that first responders are able to communicate and share information, regardless of the agency they represent. Yet, interoperability and information integration remain a challenge when it comes to real-time, multi-agency coordination.
To address this challenge, the Center for Visualization and Data Analytics (CVADA) at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology (S&T) Center of Excellence, developed the Mobile Computing Application Platform (MCAP) in partnership with the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center.
