DHS is dedicated to managing natural resources responsibly and acts as a steward of the land. We comply with laws like the Endangered Species Act, Coastal Zone Management Act, and Migratory Bird Treaty Act to protect and preserve natural habitats and wildlife. DHS is committed to partnerships with federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial entities. These collaborations enhance our ability to manage natural resources effectively and promote biodiversity.
DHS also has unique mission responsibilities related to natural resources. For example, DHS coordinates with other federal agencies and foreign nations to combat wildlife trafficking and importation of illegal wildlife products. This unique role enables DHS to strengthen enforcement, reduce demand for illegally traded wildlife and wildlife products, and build international cooperation, commitment, and public-private partnerships to combat wildlife trafficking and the illegal trading of other natural resources.
DHS has established policy and procedures in the DHS Natural Resources Management Program Directive and Instruction for the integration of natural resource management and environmental stewardship into DHS programs and activities (coming soon).
DHS is committed to developing and maintaining partnerships with federal, state, local, tribal and territorial entities in the management of natural resources. One such partnership is DHS's active membership in the Council for the Conservation of Migratory Birds. This partnership is based on Executive Order 13186 and was established to oversee the implementation of the executive order that promotes migratory bird conservation.
DHS, in furtherance of Executive Order 14008, Tackling the Climate Crisis at Home and Abroad and consistent with the America the Beautiful Initiative partnered with multiple federal agencies to support locally led conservation and park projects in nature-deprived communities.
