Here, you’ll discover everything you need to know about this innovative program that empowers high school and college students to design and implement creative solutions to prevent targeted violence and terrorism. From understanding what Invent2Prevent (I2P) is and why it matters, to exploring recent winners, debunking common doubts, and applying to participate, this page provides a comprehensive overview of how you can get involved and make a difference in your school and community.
Why Should I Participate?
Targeted violence and terrorism are on the rise, and the statistics are staggering. A recent U.S. Secret Service Mass Attacks in Public Spaces: 2016-2020 report revealed that one-third of 173 mass attacks studied from 2016-2020 were targeted. Separately, a recent U.S. Department of Justice Reported Hate Crimes at Schools: 2018-2022 report stated that schools—alarmingly—ranked as the third most common location for reported hate crime offenses between 2018 and 2022, with incidents steadily increasing each year.
Here’s the hopeful truth: Students are ready, determined, and able to be part of the solution. Together, we can take action to create safer schools and communities.
So, why I2P? I2P gives students a voice. The program empowers innovation at every step of the program. As a participant, you’ll have the opportunity to think outside the box and create groundbreaking campaigns, products, and tools to counter targeted violence and terrorism on your campus, within your school, and throughout your community.
By collaborating with fellow students, educators, and community leaders, you’ll strengthen partnerships that drive positive change and create safer schools and communities. Prevention is key to help stop these issues before they escalate. Your initiative could make a real, measurable impact.

I'm not sure that I have the skills needed to participate. | I2P is designed to support all high school and collegiate students, regardless of their prior experience and knowledge. The curriculum and resources provide a solid foundation, and the program offers resources, guidance, and mentorship to help you build skills in project planning, teamwork, and public speaking. No special background is required—just curiosity and a desire to make an impact. |
I don’t really have enough time to dedicate to this program. | While there is a commitment, I2P is designed with students in mind. You will learn time-management skills, and the program schedule is adaptable. Many past participants have balanced it successfully with school and other responsibilities. |
What if I’m not interested in a law enforcement or government career? | I2P welcomes students from all fields of study, valuing their unique perspectives and contributions. Whether you are interested in the arts, technology, science, or humanities, your viewpoint can help develop creative, impactful solutions to prevent targeted violence and terrorism. |
I’m nervous that participating in this program could put me in danger. | I2P prioritizes student safety. The program's focus is on education, awareness, and proactive community building, not fieldwork or high-risk activities. |
Is there a cost to participate? | I2P is free for all participants! There are no fees or hidden costs—just bring your ideas, enthusiasm, and commitment to make a difference. |
I don't want to work on my own. | Not at all! I2P is all about teamwork. You’ll be part of a team of students and teachers who share your commitment to creating change, and you’ll have I2P program mentors to guide you every step of the way. |
I feel like I'm too young to participate. | Absolutely not! I2P welcomes high school students because young voices and fresh ideas are crucial to addressing today’s challenges. Many high school participants have created real impact through their projects, proving that age is no barrier to making a positive change. If you’re under 18, we do require parental or guardian consent to join. This ensures everyone understands the program and feels comfortable with your involvement. Parents are encouraged to reach out with any questions—they’re an important part of our support network! |
I’m not a student. Can I still participate or amplify this effort? | You can raise awareness by visiting I2P's Spread the Word webpage. |
