WASHINGTON— At the direction of President Obama, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano reached out to officials from regions impacted by Hurricane Irene to discuss ongoing coordinated federal, state, and local response and recovery efforts including: Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, Connecticut Governor Dan Malloy, District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray, Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy, Maine Governor Paul LePage, Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, Newark Mayor Cory Booker, New Hampshire Governor John Lynch, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, North Carolina Governor Beverly Perdue, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chaffee, Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin, Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell, and several members of Congress.

These calls were in addition to the daily coordination between FEMA and state, local, and emergency officials that has been taking place since last week.

“DHS and FEMA, along with the entire federal family, are leaning forward to support our state and territorial partners as we respond and recover from the damage caused by Hurricane Irene,” said Secretary Napolitano.  “Response and recovery efforts will be an ongoing operation, and I urge Americans in affected areas to continue to listen for the guidance and direction of their state and local officials.”

Today, President Obama declared an emergency in the State of Vermont, and ordered federal aid to supplement state and local response efforts due to the emergency flooding conditions resulting from Hurricane Irene beginning on August 26, 2011, and continuing. Under the direction of President Obama and Secretary Napolitano, FEMA is also continuing close, regular coordination with all its federal, state, tribal and local partners, as well as private sector groups, faith-based and voluntary organizations, and other partners.
