Readout of Deputy Secretary Mayorkas’ Visit to California

Release Date: June 12, 2014

LOS ANGELES— Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas today concluded a trip to Fresno and Los Angeles, Calif. where he conducted site visits to review airport operations and meet with DHS personnel, local officials, and local law enforcement.  The Deputy Secretary also met with immigration stakeholders to discuss immigration reform and efforts to promote and facilitate the process for individuals to renew enrollment in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

In Fresno, Deputy Secretary Mayorkas participated in a meeting with immigration stakeholders at the Fresno Adult School to discuss the renewal process for DACA, which Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson announced on June 5. In his meetings, Deputy Secretary Mayorkas highlighted the renewal process, emphasizing that to avoid a lapse in the period of deferral and employment authorization, individuals must file renewal requests before the expiration of their current period of DACA. USCIS is encouraging requestors to submit their renewal request approximately 120 days (four months) before their current period of deferred action expires. Deputy Secretary Mayorkas also met with members of the United Farm Workers of America and local agricultural and business leaders to discuss the need for comprehensive immigration reform.

In Los Angeles, Deputy Secretary Mayorkas met with Mayor Eric Garcetti to underscore the Department of Homeland Security’s important partnerships with cities and communities across the nation to ensure public safety. Deputy Secretary Mayorkas also held another immigration stakeholder event to discuss the renewal process for DACA, and participated in a human trafficking event co-hosted by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to highlight the Department’s efforts to combat human trafficking through the work of the DHS Blue Campaign.

While in California, Deputy Secretary Mayorkas met with Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck and local law enforcement officials. He later participated in a stakeholder engagement at Los Angeles International Airport to discuss the department’s efforts to facilitate travel and tourism. Deputy Secretary Mayorkas also visited the Los Angeles Joint Regional Intelligence Center and met with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel in the region.
