On October 7, 2016, the DHS Office of Inspector General (OIG) issued report OIG-17-01, “USSS Faces Challenges Protecting Sensitive Case Management Systems and Data” that included a recommendation that the DHS Privacy Office “conduct a systemic review with recommendations for ensuring USSS compliance with DHS privacy requirements.” The DHS Privacy Office (PRIV) launched a Privacy Compliance Review (PCR) on December 2, 2016, based on the OIG recommendation that focused on USSS privacy compliance and privacy practices dating from September 1, 2015. During the course of this PCR, the DHS Privacy Office identified twelve recommendations designed to improve the culture of privacy at USSS, as well as the effectiveness of the USSS Privacy Office.
