Border Surveillance Systems (BSS)
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) deploys Border Surveillance Systems (BSS) to provide comprehensive situational awareness along the United States border for border security and national security purposes, and to assist in detecting, identifying, apprehending, and removing individuals illegally entering the United States at and between ports of entry or otherwise violating U.S. law. BSS includes commercially available technologies such as fixed and mobile video surveillance systems, range finders, thermal imaging devices, radar, ground sensors, and radio frequency sensors.

FONSI - Influx of UAC and Family Units Across the SW Border
In accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA), the DHS procedures for implementing NEPA (DHS Directive 023-01, Environmental Planning Program), and the Council on Environmental Quality’s (CEQ) NEPA implementing regulations at 40 CFR Parts 1500-1508, DHS prepared a Programmatic Environmental Assessment (PEA) to evaluate the potential impacts to the human environment resulting from increased Departmental activities necessary to process, detain, and transport unaccompanied alien children and family units who have crossed the southwest border of the United States. The PEA resulted in a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI).

On June 26, 2013, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, Canadian Public Safety Vic Toews, and Canada's Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Jason Kenney released a progress report entitled “Facilitating the Conduct of Cross-Border Business.” This report describes bilateral efforts to ensure business travelers benefit from more efficient and predictable border clearance processes.

Final PEA for Low Energy X-Ray Inspection Systems at CBP Operational Areas
In accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection prepared this Final Programmatic Environmental Assessment to address the potential effects of establishing Low Energy X-Ray Inspection Systems at various U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) operational areas throughout the United States. The purpose of the Proposed Action is to non-intrusively inspect vehicles at CBP operational areas for the presence of contraband, including weapons of mass destruction, explosives, and illicit drugs.
