Science and Technology Collection

The DHS Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) is the Department’s primary research and development arm and manages science and technology research, from development through transition, for the Department's operational components and first responders.

    Electromagnetic pulse (EMP) and geomagnetic disturbance (GMD) events pose significant threats to the nation’s critical infrastructure. DHS has been directed to conduct research and development to better understand impacts of EMP and GMD events and develop technologies and guidelines to enhance and protect critical infrastructure.

  • CIVIC Innovation Challenge 2022 Fact Sheet

    The Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate continues its partnership with the National Science Foundation and U.S. Department of Energy on the Civic Innovation Challenge (CIVIC), a nation-wide research and action competition aiming to fund ready-to-implement, research-based pilot projects with potential for scalable, sustainable, and transferable impact on community-identified priorities.     The DHS Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) partners with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Engineer Research and Development Center (USACE-ERDC) to research and assess communities’ vulnerabilities to flood hazards, to increase community resilience by improved emergency response planning, and simulating different types of failures to different components of flood infrastructure systems.

  • Remote Sensing for Geohazard Resilience Fact Sheet

    The Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate, in coordination with Massachusetts Institute of Technology Lincoln Laboratory, aims to create a comprehensive landslide event inventory, identify actively deforming hillslopes and develop novel methods to predict hillslope deformations, and monitor hillslope deformations prone to landslides over the entirety of any earthquake-affected area.
