The DHS Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) is the Department’s primary research and development arm and manages science and technology research, from development through transition, for the Department's operational components and first responders.

  • S&T FRG Terrorist Attacks in the U.S Between 1970 and 2013: Data from the Global Terrorism Database Overview

    START’s Global Terrorism Database (GTD) contains information on more than 125,000 domestic and international terrorist attacks that occurred between 1970 and 2013. Collectively, these attacks have resulted in more than 266,000 deaths and more than 354,000 injuries. This research highlight focuses on the terrorist attacks that occurred in the United States between 1970 and 2013.

  • S&T FRG 30 Day Public Comment Period for Revised SDOC Templates

    The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) Office for Interoperability and Compatibility (OIC) continues its efforts to streamline the Suppliers’ Declaration of Compliance (SDOC) and Summary Test Report (STR) templates in an effort to make P25 CAP documentation more useful to end users as well as reduce the burden on manufacturers and P25 CAP recognized laboratories. The latest versions of the SDOC templates can be found below.

    Credentialing is a system by which identification cards or other tokens are used to authenticate a person and transmit skills, qualifications, and other attributes associated with that identity. Interoperability, in the credentialing context, provides the capability for a jurisdiction to access information and trust its legitimacy in order to make decisions about granting access and privileges.

    The First Responder Guidance for Improving Survivability in Improvised Explosive Device and/or Active Shooter Incidents translates evidence-based response strategies from the U.S. military’s vast experience in responding to and managing casualties from IED and/or active shooter incidents into the civilian first responder environment. This guidance also incorporates civilian best practices and lessons learned from similar incidents, both in the United States and abroad.

    The paramount mission of the United States Secret Service-protecting the President and other high-ranking national officials-allows no tolerance for error. A single miscue, or even a split-second delay, could have disastrous consequences for the Nation and the world. The men and women of the Secret Service fulfill one of the most important obligations in this country, and they do so often with no personal recognition, no desire for fame, and modest compensation. We know special agents of the United States Secret Service as the silent figures around the President, but we tend to notice them only in the extraordinarily rare moments when they fail. Most Americans know little of the work of the Secret Service's Uniformed Division and do not realize that it is the Uniformed Division that plays a primary role in the protection of the White House.

  • Protecting Responders Health After A Wide-Area Aerosol Anthrax Attack

    The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has issued guidance, based on a federal interagency working group effort, to educate first responders on protective actions they should take in the event of a wide-area anthrax release.  The document, “Guidance for Protecting Responders’ Health during the First Week Following a Wide-Area Aerosol Anthrax Attack,” focuses on a specific scenario of a large-scale aerosol anthrax release in a major U.S. city and the immediate post-attack environment.
