Established in 2004, GMO is responsible for programs, standards, strategic planning, and innovation as defined in DHS Management Directive 034-01.
GMO is led by the DHS Geospatial Information Officer (GIO) and provides DHS components with:
- Strategic direction, policy, technical assistance, and oversight
- Data, technology, and standards
- Leadership and coordination
- Stakeholder collaboration within and outside DHS
- Executive leadership for programs, initiatives, and standards
- Information assurance and security compliance
GMO represents DHS across all federal geospatial forums, including the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC). The Office is responsible for preparing the Annual Covered Agency Report, participating in biennial audits conducted by the Office of the Inspector General (OIG), and leading the DHS response to audit findings and recommendations.
