Creating a Login.gov account for GMO-managed systems

Platforms and data resources managed by the Geospatial Management Office (GMO) use Login.gov for authenticating users outside the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Who needs to create an account?

These instructions are for non-DHS users who support a homeland security or homeland defense mission AND whose role requires access to the Geospatial Information Infrastructure (GII) and/or any geospatial dashboards, data, or tools housed on the GII, including:

  • Homeland Infrastructure Foundation-Level Data (HIFLD) Secure repository
  • DHS Common Operating Picture (COP)

How long will it take?

  • Form completion takes ~5 min.
  • You should receive notification that your account has been activated within 15 min.

Note: The account creation form will timeout after 15 minutes.

What do I need to create an account?

  • Your work email address
  • Smart phone
  • State-issued ID
  • Social Security Number

Which email do I use?

  • Your Login.gov account must be associated with an official agency or business email, not a personal address.
  • If you already have a GII account, use the email associated with that account. This ensures that you will maintain all existing permissions.

Instructions

Important: You must use the same workstation and browser for all steps.

  1. Go to the DHS Login.gov portal.
  2. Follow instructions and prompts to create an account using your work email (for existing GII users, the email associated with your GII account).
  3. NEW USERS ONLY: You will be prompted to complete a request form. The GII Team will verify all information provided via that form. If the request is approved, you will receive an email notification when your GII account is activated.

If you experience issues registering for a Login.gov account, try the following:

  • Use indirect lighting with a dark background when uploading an image of your state-issued ID.
  • Complete registration within a single browser.
  • Remove any credit locks or freezes.
  • If you have moved within the past 12-24 months and fail identity proofing, enter your old home address.
  • Format your address to match the USPS format.
