Next Phase of DHS Campaign to Stop Fentanyl Will Focus on Interdiction and Supply Chain Disruption
Following the success of Operations Blue Lotus and Four Horsemen, which stopped nearly 10,000 pounds of fentanyl during their two-month run and led to 284 arrests in those two months, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the next phase of its surge campaign to target and prevent fentanyl from entering the United States. The next two Operations, “Artemis” and “Rolling Wave,” will consist of multidisciplined interagency jump teams at strategic locations with an enhanced focus on disrupting the supply chain used in the development and movement of fentanyl.

EU-US joint statement following the EU-US Ministerial on Justice and Home Affairs
On 21 June 2023, the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the European Union hosted the EU-U.S. Ministerial Meeting on Justice and Home Affairs in Stockholm. The European Union was represented by the Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson, the Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders, as well as the Swedish Minister for Justice Gunnar Strömmer. The incoming Presidency of the Council was represented by the Spanish Minister of Justice Maria Pilar Llop Cuenca and the Spanish Minister of the Interior Fernando Grande-Marlaska. The United States was represented by Attorney General Merrick Garland and Secretary for Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas.

Deputy Secretary John Tien is an extraordinary patriot and public servant and a wonderful human being. On behalf of 260,000 of us throughout the Department of Homeland Security – across the country and around the world – I express our profound thanks to him for making our Department and all of us the beneficiaries of his dedication to country and qualities as a person for the past two years. He will retire from our Department on July 20 to rejoin his family in Atlanta, having made our Department better and further burnished his legacy of service.

Message from Deputy Secretary Tien on Transition from DHS
After 26 years of combined federal service including three combat tours in Iraq and living apart from my family for the last two years, I have decided to return to Atlanta to re-join them there. As our Secretary so eloquently says, “when we serve, we all serve.” As a result, I first thank my family for providing me much-needed emotional support while I once again served the nation. It is now my turn to do the same for them.
