Privacy

The DHS Privacy Office is responsible for evaluating the Department programs, systems, and initiatives for potential privacy impacts, and providing strategies to reduce the privacy impact.

  • DHS/CBP/PIA-029 REMEDY Enterprise Services Management System

    The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Office of Information and Technology’s (OIT) REMEDY Enterprise Services Management serves as an intake tool for CBP technical support and customer service personnel supporting non-CBP persons from other Government agencies, state, local and federal law enforcement entities, as well as trade-related organizations requiring access to CBP-owned information technology systems. CBP previously published a Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) discussing the use of REMEDY, both as an internal intake tool for CBP technical support as well as customer service for members of the public to submit queries related to various agency programs. CBP is updating the PIA to provide notice that REMEDY has been updated to only provide support for individuals requiring access to CBP systems or information. CBP has created various public programmatic websites to provide direct customer service support to members of the public and has removed these services from the REMEDY tool.

    CBP provides Human Resources (HR) services to CBP and other DHS components through a web-based tool called the Human Resources Business Engine (HRBE). HRBE provides case management and HR business process capabilities to CBP and its DHS component customers. The specific HR services vary based on the need and service request of each DHS component customer.

    CBP operates the Enterprise Management Information System-Enterprise Data Warehouse (EMIS-EDW) to consolidate and present statistical information using reports and graphs using dashboard technology. EMIS-EDW warehouses current and historical data from various DHS source systems to provide timely statistical reports and trend analyses to management for situational awareness and the making of critical organizational decisions. CBP is conducting this PIA to assess the privacy risks of this information technology system and to notify the public of the collection, storage, retention, use, and dissemination of information belonging to members of the public that resides within EMIS-EDW.

    The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP Enterprise Geospatial Information Systems (eGIS) displays data on maps to monitor activities along the U.S. border for potential border vulnerabilities, corrective actions, border incidents, assets, and relevant events (such as arrests and seizures) using geographic data. eGIS presents visual displays of current and historical data from various DHS source systems to provide situational awareness for making critical organizational decisions. CBP is republishing and restructured this Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) to assess this information technology system's privacy risk and to notify the public of previously published and new Portals that may collection, storage, retention, use, and dissemination of information within eGIS belonging to members of the public.
