Improvised explosive devices (IED) are an ongoing threat in the United States. Terrorists are continually adapting new bomb designs to thwart law enforcement. The Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) has teamed with the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Counter-IED Section and the National Bomb Squad Commanders Advisory Board to mount a research, development and evaluation program to counter terrorist efforts. The program is called Response and Defeat Operations Support (REDOPS).
REDOPS gathers requirements and innovations from bomb technicians across the country. It funds research and development to meet the requirements with increasingly effective anti-IED technologies and procedures. It also evaluates the innovations and provides development funding to bring those innovations to the entire bomb squad community.
S&T’s new “REDOPS in 100 Seconds” video offers an overview of the program and its role and importance to the bomb squad community
