WASHINGTON – The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) today awarded $196,760 to Bastille Networks, Inc. of Atlanta, Georgia, to advance Internet of Things (IoT) wireless protocols. The work is awarded under the Silicon Valley Innovation Program (SVIP) Other Transaction Solicitation (OTS) aimed at non-traditional performers to offer solutions to some of the toughest threats facing DHS and the homeland security mission. The project titled “Security for the Internet of Things” was awarded through Securing the Internet of Things (IoT), Solicitation Number: HSHQDC-16-R-00035, the first solicitation under the SVIP.
“IoT Systems Security is at the core of securing the homeland security enterprise,” said Acting DHS Under Secretary for Science and Technology Dr. Robert Griffin. “It involves securing the connectivity of the nation’s critical infrastructure; anywhere where wireless security can pose a threat.”
The Internet of Things is a convergence of mobile devices, information technology networks, connected sensors and devices. The DHS OTS call for security solutions seeks novel ideas and technologies to improve situational awareness and security to detect, authenticate and update IoT components and systems.
Bastille Network’s project is focused on identifying enterprise IoT protocols and Phase 1 will survey wireless protocols used in critical infrastructure applications such as power plants and water treatment facilities. The goal of the Phase 1 work is to identify existing protocols and scope out requirements for adding missing protocols. The project will culminate in the deployment of a candidate site and identify future use-cases for IoT monitoring.
“These new capabilities give DHS better insight and awareness into wireless network device detection,” said Melissa Ho, Managing Director, SVIP. “This project demonstrates how the nation’s innovators are well positioned to solve national security challenges that impact our daily lives.”
