Preceding or during a natural disaster or emergency situation, some public safety agencies have used the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) service to pass relevant information to the public.
Responder News: Protecting Responders When Disaster Strikes
Emergency workers face many risks and challenges when disasters arise. To address these dangers, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed the Emergency Responder Health Monitoring and Surveillance (ERHMS) system, a health monitoring and surveillance framework that includes recommendations and tools specific to protect emergency responders during all phases of a response.

Disasters aren’t constrained by borders, so emergency response can’t be constrained either. If a hurricane were to cause major damage in cities within the United States and Canada, responders and government leaders from both countries may need to work together to provide emergency assistance. The Canada-U.S. Enhanced Resiliency Experiment (CAUSE) uses cross-border information-sharing experiments to help increase resilience at our northern border.

DHS S&T Holds Groundbreaking Ceremony for New Explosives Detection Lab
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate Under Secretary Dr. Reginald Brothers delivered remarks at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Independent Test & Evaluation (IT&E) Certification Laboratory building at the Transportation Security Laboratory (TSL). Located at the William J. Hughes FAA Technical Center in Egg Harbor Township, N.J., the new building will provide approximately 13,500 square feet of extra reinforced laboratory space for conducting tests of explosives detection systems.
