Technologies Available for Licensing
DHS has several technologies available for licensing. Contact the Technology Transfer Program if you are interested in licensing any of the following technologies.
DHS-004 – High Volume Sampling Front End Collection Device
Synopsis Taken from Abstract:
A device for sampling surfaces for the presence of compounds, including a housing for the device that includes: a proximal end adapted to receive its negative pressure gradient and a distal end adapted to contact the surfaces; a heating element spaced from the distal end; a primary filter spaced from the heating element; and a secondary filter spaced from the primary filter. Also provided is a method for sampling a surface for the presence of compounds by capturing first fractions of the compounds with a primary filter while allowing second fractions of the compounds to pass through the primary filter; heating the primary filter to volatilize the first fractions; capturing the volatized first fractions and second fractions with a secondary filter; and analyzing the secondary filter to identify the compounds.
Applications:
- Explosive detection
- Narcotic detection
Reference Number: DHS-004

DHS-006 – Inert and Non-Toxic Explosive Simulants and Method of Production
Synopsis from Abstract:
Simulants and methods of production that imitate characteristics of known explosives, including characteristics at the microscopic and macroscopic level. The present disclosure includes a simulant with the same texture, granularity, bulk density, particle density and porosity of a known explosive. The simulants described herein provide the macroscopic bulk physical properties and the microscopic scale properties of actual explosives.
Applications:
- Explosive detection
- Safety training
Reference Number: DHS-006

DHS-013 – Quick Release Flare Tube Adapter
Synopsis from Abstract:
A quick release illumination flare mounting arrangement particularly adapted for use in an aircraft. Includes a base plate mounted to the aircraft’s deck and an aperture in sealed contact with the upper end of a flare discharge tube coupled to a discharge aperture in the fuselage. A coupling assembly, which includes a second aperture, is easily coupled to and removed from the base plate by coupling pins. The coupling assembly further includes an upper plate adapted for secure sealed, easily removable mounting to the lower end of a flare receiving tube.
Applications:
- Aircraft illumination
- Enhanced nighttime visibility
Reference Number: DHS-013

DHS-044 – Dry Transfer Method for the Preparation of Explosive Test Samples
Synopsis from Abstract:
A method of preparing samples for testing explosive and drug detectors that searches for particles in the air. A liquid containing the substance of interest is placed on a flexible Teflon® surface and allowed to dry, and then the Teflon surface is rubbed onto an item that is to be tested for the presence of the substance. The particles of the substance of interest are transferred to the item, but are readily picked up by an air stream or other sampling device and carried into the detector.
Application:
- Explosive screening
- Drug screening
Reference Number: DHS-044

DHS-058 – Very Thin Dosimeter Filters and Low Profile Dosimeter Incorporating the Same
Synopsis from Abstract:
A novel dosimeter filter and a dosimeter incorporating the same. More specifically, one embodiment of the invention relates to a very thin dosimetry device comprising an optically stimulated luminescent material (e.g., aluminum oxide) sandwiched between at least two novel Combined Equilibrium and Energy Compensation (CEEC) filters, wherein each CEEC filter comprises two layers of filtering material: an electronic equilibrium filter layer and an energy compensation filter layer wherein the electronic equilibrium filters comprise steel and the energy compensation filters comprise Tantalum.
Application:
- Radiation exposure measurement

DHS-081 – Method and Apparatus for Obtaining Spatial Information and Measuring the Dielectric Constant of an Object
Synopsis from Abstract:
Methods and apparatus are provided to obtain spatial information about an object and measure the dielectric constant of an object. They include placing the object in a cavity and interacting electromagnetic radiation at a plurality of frequencies with the object to obtain a corresponding plurality of measured resonant transverse magnetic modes. The apparatus also includes using the plurality of measured resonant transverse magnetic modes to obtain the spatial information for the object and/or using the plurality of measured resonant transverse magnetic modes to obtain the dielectric constant for the object.
Application:
- Weapons detection
- Drug detection
- Increased quality control in manufacturing
- Medical imaging diagnostics
