Public Safety and Violence Prevention—Areas of Research

Three core values drive our research: quality, independence, and mission relevance. S&T conducts research in the areas of evaluation research, capability enhancement, data development, and outreach, which are summarized below.

Evaluation Research

  • This type of research involves engaging in evidence-based systematic evaluation reviews of current research to guide policy and operations. Evaluation research will also generate data that improves targeted violence and terrorism prevention solutions and reduce the threat of grievance-based mass violence.

Capability Development and Enhancement

  • These activities include the development of training, information sharing infrastructure for local authorities and providers, exercises, analytic tools and techniques, online services, strategic communication research, and operational best practices.
  • The development and support of infrastructure for information sharing between law enforcement, mental health, education, and social service providers.

Data Development

  • Objective, quantitative data provides insights that allow for strategic allocation of resources, effective program design, and prioritization of threats. This includes data that informs strategy and operations for DHS components, and interagency partners. In addition, the data will contribute to reviews of techniques in the identification, intervention, and prevention of targeted violence.
