    The New York Police Department (NYPD), the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) took part in an active shooter exercise early Sunday at a Brooklyn high school to evaluate tactics and technologies for responding to and containing rapidly escalating shooting incidents.

    It’s actually not movie magic that facilitates saving the day; it is a technologically advanced reality being demonstrated right now thanks to tools in development by DHS S&T. The technology is being tested within the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) by the Metro Transit Police to ensure riders’ safety.

  • DHS Partners with UND to Research Unmanned Aerial Technology

    DHS S&T and the University of North Dakota (UND) announced today a three-year cooperative research and development agreement designed to explore the uses of unmanned aerial technology as well as mitigations for possible misuse.

  • DHS S&T to Conduct Airflow Study in NYC Subway

    DHS S&T will conduct a week-long airflow study in portions of the New York City (NYC) subway system to gather data on the behavior of airborne particles in the event contaminants were released. This study poses no risk to the general public and will run from May 9 to May 13.

  • A Good CAUSE

    Our latest venture, CAUSE IV, tested the response to a tornado scenario on the Blue Water Bridge, which is the second busiest crossing between the United States and Canada, as it resides in Port Huron, Michigan and Sarnia, Ontario. The experiment consisted of two response situations, both focusing on how various government agencies share information in a crisis.

    DHS S&T awarded $75,000 to Machine-to-Machine Intelligence Corporation based in Moffett Field, CA to make the SPECK cryptographic protocol available to IoT devices.
