Welcome to the DHS Science and Technology (S&T) “Securing our Future Now: S&T’s Path Forward” Webinar Series. Preparing for our complex future requires new ideas and outcomes for how technologies need to be integrated, secure, and protected to mitigate risks and save lives. If we’re not organized effectively, we will not achieve common objectives to protect people, commerce, and infrastructure. To get the job done, S&T is convening a diverse group of public-private partners to present the following:

September - Clearing the Path: Responding to Disasters During a Crisis
When responding to natural disasters during a crisis, like the COVID-19 pandemic, emergency responders, hospitals, and supply chains are working at capacity, all while the nation is facing hurricanes, wild-fires, and floods. For communities to adapt and respond to these compounding pressures, they must understand how technologies can inform risk-based decision making in areas of neighborhood health monitoring, supply chains, securing evacuation shelters, crisis communications, and information sharing among front-line responders. Innovation in autonomous, predictive analytics, modeling and simulation, and mobility offer new solutions to tackle immediate challenges and prepare for emerging threats.
- Date: September 24 at 1:00 p.m. ET
Speakers:
- David Maurstad, Deputy Associate Administrator, FEMA
- Duane Caneva, Chief Medical Officer, DHS Countering WMD Office
- Ted Smith, Ph.D., Wastewater Based Epidemiology, Professor of Environmental Medicine, University of Louisville and advisor to Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer

Faced with Disruption: Securing your Digital Connection
Advances in 5G, AI, and IoT, are increasing online services of telemedicine, education, voting, commerce, and public safety. Despite advances in speed, access, and information sharing, risks remain with protecting personal and business data, which impacts trust in how government and industry deliver products and services. DHS is investing in new capabilities to secure your digital connections and keep services uninterrupted for diverse security environments. Learn what role you can play to help DHS deliver advanced capabilities to ‘secure your digital connection.’
- Date: October 6 at 5:00 p.m. ET
Speakers:
- Welcome: William Bryan, Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Under Secretary for DHS Science and Technology Directorate (S&T)
- Moderator: Mary McGinley, Physical and Cyber Security Portfolio Director, DHS S&T
- Brian Gattoni, Chief Technology Officer, DHS Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA),
- Karim Mahrous, Technical Research Lead, Sandia National Laboratories
Objectives:
- Hear how emerging cyber threats are changing the way DHS protects against tampering and threats to flows of commerce and our political way of life and how we include industry in our decision-making.
- Understand what role you can play to help DHS build cyber resilience and deliver solutions to “secure your digital connection.”
Questions and Call to Action:
- How are emerging cyber threats changing the way DHS protects against tampering and threats to flows of commerce and our political way of life?
- The security landscape is evolving alongside advances in the private sector. What is our strategy to include industry innovators in our decision-making?
- How can small businesses protect themselves from cyber-attacks that seek to steal IP and harm business operations and service offerings?
- How do communities build cyber resilience to protect their public data and emergency services and compete in the new world order?
Moving to the Edge: Securing the Shift to Prediction and Preparedness
Advances in machine learning, quantum systems, and connectivity requires new partners and knowledge of how technology is changing critical infrastructure operations. From public safety and public health, to smart transportation and infrastructure, this conversation will lay-out how data-driven edge computing presents new opportunities for how DHS can stay ahead of complex threats and help build smarter, safer, and more resilient communities.
- Date: TBD
- Registration: TBD
- Objectives:
- To increase our security posture, manage growth, and better prepare for “what if” scenarios, this talk will address how DHS is preparing for a future of increased visualization and automation applications.
- Understand how DHS is building new partnerships from different fields, sciences, and markets to better understand how the evolution of “moving to the edge” is changing our thinking about risk, data, and predictive analytics.
