MITRE Caldera

The Homeland Security Systems Engineering and Development Institute (HSSEDI), operated by MITRE for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), partnered with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) to further fortify critical infrastructure. This collaboration led to the inception of Caldera for OT, an extension specifically tailored to address threats within operational technology (OT) environments.

Caldera, an open-source, scalable adversary emulation platform developed and maintained by MITRE, serves as a cornerstone in fortifying cyber defenses. Its agile framework, rooted in the MITRE ATT&CK® knowledge base, aids security teams in enhancing their cyber defense strategies through real adversary technique simulation.

HSSEDI's role, under the direction of DHS, was instrumental in shaping the Caldera for OT extensions in close collaboration with CISA. Leveraging Caldera's robust capabilities, the extension empowers security teams to conduct automated adversary emulation exercises focused on mitigating the security threats prevalent in OT systems.

By integrating these extensions into the Caldera platform, security teams gain a powerful toolset capable of precise threat targeting and mitigation within OT environments. This initiative aligns with HSSEDI's commitment to bolstering national security measures and fortifying critical infrastructure against evolving cyber threats.

Collaborative Impact and Significance

The collaboration between HSSEDI and CISA led to the development of Caldera for OT, a pivotal advancement in operational technology cybersecurity. This extension empowered security teams to proactively identify and tackle vulnerabilities within OT systems through enhanced adversary emulation capabilities. Its release on GitHub signifies a community-driven commitment to fortifying critical infrastructure. HSSEDI's pivotal role underscores its commitment to advancing cybersecurity strategies and safeguarding national critical infrastructure.
