In August 2023, MITRE inaugurated its groundbreaking facility in Orange, Virginia, dedicated exclusively to advancing small uncrewed aircraft systems (sUAS). Situated just minutes from MITRE's Charlottesville, VA., site, the Range serves as a pivotal location for government sponsors and first responders to research, test, and evaluate the newest advances in robotics, communications, autonomous systems, drones, and counter-UAS technologies. With over two decades of leadership in drone technology, MITRE’s Range provides a dynamic testing ground for UAS-related technologies.
Ongoing Drone Innovation
The Range stands as a springboard for continuous innovation and exploration in the realm of UAS. Collaborating with diverse stakeholders, the Range pioneers advancements tailored for critical applications. It encompasses 16 acres of dedicated land with access to hundreds of acres for operational security and thousands of acres of aerial access.
In 2023, the Range's use involved first responder drone initiatives, Safely Operating Aircraft Remotely (SOAR) training, and partnerships with the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Department of State and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. These collaborations highlight the Range’s importance in fostering innovation and addressing critical needs across various sectors.
Planned developments in 2025 include a lab and manufacturing facilities, classrooms, conference rooms, office spaces, and more, reflecting MITRE’s commitment to bolstering UAS innovation and research.
